Myths About Tyres And Snow Chains In Winter

As winter rolls on in the UK, car owners up and down the country look for ways to keep their pride and joy safe and undamaged. This means that, as well as finding crucial bits of advice, many myths about winter car safety often re-emerge. Some of the most common myths relate to winter tyres and snow chains. That's why, here at Zunsport, we're committed to tackling some of these myths and setting the record straight. Here's the truth about three of the most common myths regarding winter tyres and snow chains:

Myth: Winter Tyres Are Only Suitable For The Colder Months Of The Year

Truth: Winter tyres are specifically designed for snow, ice, and cold roads. However, another type of tyre – All Seasons, are suitable for use throughout the entire year. This is because they have enhanced features such as grip and tread that make for safer car journeys on the road and some other terrains in both the Summer and Winter months.

Myth: Every Tyre Requires Snow Chains To Be Effective

Truth: Not every type of winter tyre needs to have snow chains on. Whilst it's true that many types of tyres will benefit from the installation of snow chains, there are some winter tyre types where this is unnecessary. If you're unsure which tyres require snow chains, ask a local tyre fitter for advice.

Myth: Every Vehicle Can Use Snow Chains

Truth: The reality is that snow chains are not able to be supported by all types of vehicles. This is mainly because there is a certain amount of clearance that is required between the car's body and the tyres. Tyres with chains on are wider so may contact bodywork, suspension, or brake parts. Chains can also affect the operation of electronic wheel sensors.
