Range Rover History

By Zunsport - 3rd May, 2024

The Range Rover brand is a popular and luxury driving option for many people in the UK and the launch of our new Zunsport Range Rover grille range has caused us to look in detail at some of the Range Rover history. Check out some of the fascinating history of the Range Rover below.

Brief Range Rover History

The Range Rover was first launched in 1970, although the first prototype, Velar, was previewed for the first time in 1969. The immediate popularity of the luxury SUV didn't prevent continued evolution of the vehicle to meet consumer demands for increased sophistication, technological capabilities and all-around enhanced driving experience.

The very early prototypes were badged as Velar to hide the fact they were an offshoot of the Land Rover brand. The name Velar originates from the Italian word 'velare' which means to cover or veil, and Land Rover certainly went to great lengths to maintain the secrecy of their new SUV.

After the success of the prototype Velar concept, the three-door Range Rover hit the market in 1970 and was immensely popular from the start. The elegant vehicle had permanent four-wheel drive and a clamshell bonnet with two spotlights mounted either side of the Range Rover grille.

The four-door Range Rover followed 11 years later, giving even more options and increasing the vehicle's popularity even more.

1994 saw the launch of an even more luxurious second-generation vehicle, featuring more designer influences and rectangular headlights instead of the circular spots.

Seven years on, the third generation Range Rover hit the salerooms, inspired by the beautiful design of a Riva speedboat and featuring lots of metal finishes to the interior. You can truly complement the stylish and unique design of your Third Gen Range Rover by opting for one of our car grilles to highlight the aerodynamic shape of your vehicle.

Other classic vehicles in Range Rover's history include the move towards the Range Stormer in 2004, which set the direction for all future vehicles, the Range Rover Sport which featured a stylish grille, and the 2011 launch of the award-winning Evoque. The 2017 Velar is the latest addition to the distinguished Range Rover line up.
