The History Of The BMW

By Zunsport - 3rd May, 2024

Ever wondered how BMW got to where they are? In the modern day, BMW is a reputable company, producing prestigious cars that are loved by vehicle enthusiasts across the world. However, BMW haven’t had the smoothest ride, surviving two world wars and multiple recessions. In fact, BMW only became an iconic car brand in recent history.

Early Days

Founded in 1916 by Franz Josef Popp, Karl Rapp, and Camillo Castiglioni, BMW didn't start off producing high-end vehicles. They played a big part in the first world war, providing more than 600 aeroplane engines to the Prussian army.

In 1923, BMW progressed from engines to vehicles, producing their very first motorcycle which they called the R32. In fact, they didn't produce their first car until 1928 and the design was borrowed from the Austin Motor Company.

The Second World War

The history of BMW isn't all positive and WWII was a dark period in BMW's past. Production was slow and all efforts went into producing aircraft and motorcycles for the war; all car production for the average person stopped completely.

Post-War Success

It took almost a decade for BMW to bounce back from the war. In 1951, they produced their first car since the war; it was called the BMW 501 and could seat up to six people.

BMW then opened plants in other countries such as South Africa; they hoped to provide jobs for the segregated and fight against the discrimination after the African apartheid.

BMW In The Modern Day

Since the millennium, BMW has established itself as an innovative company that focuses on research and developing new technologies. In 2002, BMW finally had full creative and financial control over the company, which they celebrated by opening a plant in Goodwood, England.

They have ambitious aims for the future, and by 2020, they want to be the number one high-end vehicle manufacturer in the world.
